Welcoming autumn at Brasserie Blanc, Chichester, West Sussex

Girolle mushrooms, pheasant and pumpkin, the new autumn menu at Brasserie Blanc in Chichester brings seasonal taste sensations to the table. With five branches in London and 12 countrywide, hopefully, you’re never too far away from a Brasserie Blanc.

When we were invited to check out the new autumn menu at Brasserie Blanc tucked away at the end of East Street in a quiet little square, I knew we’d be in for a treat. I’d dined here several times before and it had always been excellent.

When I visited last week with my husband and step-daughter, Sophie, for her birthday, once again, it didn’t disappoint. The staff were extremely welcoming and attentive, without fussing, not just to us but to all the diners, as we observed. And the food was superb. It’s also good to know that Brasserie Blanc pride themselves on seasonal fresh ingredients, sustainably and ethically sourced.

So what’s on the menu, you ask?

Baked Saint-Marcellin Cheese

The first thing that caught my eye was the Baked Saint-Marcellin Cheese (£8.50), however, I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist a dessert and three courses would be too much for me. To resolve the dilemma we shared a starter between the three of us. With the addition of a couple of extra chunks of freshly baked bread, there was plenty for us all. And boy, was it good!

This ridiculously creamy mountain cheese from the Rhône-Alpes région of France, warmed in a ceramic pot until it’s delightfully gooey, tasted sublime with slices of apple, celery and bread. Sadly, the dollop of truffled honey on the top got immediately lost as we tucked in, so a tad more would have been even better.

Everyone agreed it was an excellent start to our meal and there was plenty of cheese for the three of us.

British Pheasant with Cranberry, Girolle and Muscat Pumpkin

The menu features three autumnal main courses, namely Duck Leg Confit with Blackberries, Smoked Pork Belly with Apple and Crackling and British Pheasant with Cranberry, Girolle and Muscat Pumpkin. All three of us opted for the slow-roasted pheasant with Dauphinoise potatoes, soused girolle mushrooms, pumpkin, cranberry sauce and a port and red wine jus (£16.95).

The moist, rich meat of the pheasant was perfectly complemented by the earthy mushrooms, vegetables and sauces. We also shared a side order of Wilted Spinach and Kale with Whyke Farm Cheddar sauce and almonds. Delicious!

Sticky Toffee Pudding or Pistachio Souffle

The hardest decision of all had to be choosing just one dessert. The Bramley Apple and Pear Crumble with Calvados crème fraîche sounded tempting, as did the Chocolate Indulgence. However, in the end, I decided upon Sticky Toffee Pudding (£6.95), an old favourite of mine.

Sophie’s choice of Pistachio Souffle (£7.65) served with a chocolate ice cream was also a huge hit. She said it was like eating a cloud.

Both desserts were excellent. Mind you, if we’d not had the baked cheese as a starter the last item on the dessert menu would have also been a strong contender; Saint-Marcellin cheese with quince jelly, fig and almond cake, apricot, celery and crackers. I might just have to try that next time I’m in town.

Veggie options and dietary requirements at Brasserie Blanc, Chichester

Brasserie Blanc can cater for most dietary requirements with an allergen menu available on request but as with any busy kitchen, they can’t 100% guarantee no cross-contamination.

Vegetarians and vegans are also well-catered for with several options for starters, mains and desserts. The vegan Moroccan Mezze Platter sounds particularly good and can be eaten as a starter or main.

I love Brasserie Blanc's. Started going when my girls were babies as they'd make purees for babies and we've been hooked since.

Mmmm, the food looks delicious and the surroundings look so relaxed. I can honestly say I was sold at baked Saint-Marcellin.

It was so good but I believe it's a seasonal dish so you'll have to visit fairly soon if you want to try it ;-)

I had no idea Raymond Blanc had brasseries in London. Your piece really tempted me. I will have to seek one out.

Would love to have a meal here after a long walk in the Sussex hills. I love the looks of the decor, very cosy and the food and wine is something I would love to have today at lunch :)

A walk in the South Downs is a fabulous way to build up an appetite and they're just a 10-minute drive from Chichester. If you enjoy local history and folklore you could even join me on one of my guided walks https://hellosussex.com/sussex-walks/
